This drive travels through a gorgeous section of Colorado Rocky Mountain scenery and takes you to what many believe is the most beautiful area in Colorado - Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park. Along the way you'll pass the famous "Chapel on the Rocks" - a picturesque old stone chapel built on a large rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapel_on_the_Rock). Pope John Paul visited this chapel on one of his visits to the US.

You mostly travel along valleys with majestic mountain peaks bordering the road on both sides and it all culminates with your stop at Rock Mountain National park which is a must see for everyone (plan on spending a few days in the park).

The route is almost entirely rural until you get to the town of Estes Park which is a major tourist town with everything you could ever want or need available (restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, groceries, souvenir shops, etc, etc). And this route is never that far away from Denver, or Golden, or Boulder colorado so you are always close to civilization ..... but you probably not want to come back after taking this tour.

As mentioned before, Estes Park is a major tourist town ... not big by any means but it simply seems entirely focused on serving the throngs of tourist that pass through to Rock Mountain National Park. So everything you want can be found there. And, the Rocky Mountain National Park has got to be one of the top US National Parks in the country. It has many roads for touring and pulling over and taking in the scenery as well as many miles of hiking trails and camping opportunities as well.
