Scenery You'll See
The highlight of this road trip is the 14411 foot Mt. Rainier, the highest peak and third-most voluminous volcano in the Cascades. This mountain has an original dome shaped peak that is heavily glaciated. The landscape along this route is dominated by rivers, canyons and waterfalls dramatically outlined by the dark volcanic surfaces. The overall road conditions are almost ideal for a great driving experience. There are lots of twists and turns and long climbs for you to enjoy. As you close in on Sunrise, the route's end point, you'll drive though the best portions of this route - the Cayuse Pass mountain pass.
Towns/Cities You'll Pass By/Through
Elbe Washington (the ride's starting point) is pretty much the only town on this route.
Attractions & Points-of-Interests Along the Way
In Elbe Washington, the home station of the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad you can take a 14-mile round trip excursion on a train pulled by a vintage steam-powered logging locomotive. The train ride will take you within 25 miles of Mt. Rainier through lush green forests. You'll come to Nisqually entrance, the main entrance to Mt. Rainier National park. The park has a museum and educational trail that outline the park's history and attractions. Further up Rte. 706 you can stop your car and walk to the Narada Falls, where the Paradise River takes its 168 ft dive. Continuing on the route you'll come to Paradise, the most visited place in the park. Here you'll find the Jackson Visitor Center where you can see exhibits about geology, glaciers and mountain flora and fauna. Next on your road trip is Stevens Canyon Road. This section of the route runs along canyons, lakes and waterfalls and provides access to the Reflection Lakes with their clear blue waters and mirror like surfaces. Towards the route's end is Sunrise point, the highest car-accessible point along the ridge. It offers spectacular views of Mt. Rainier to the west and other peaks among the Cascades. Here you can also see Emmons Glacier, the largest glacier in the continental United States. More information about the majestic Mt. Rainier is available at the Sunrise Visitor Center.

Comments: I had lived in Seattle for about 3 years before I finally made the trip down to Rainer. I kicked myself for waiting that long as it was a very nice drive and the scenery is so breathtaking and wonderful that in a few hours all my stress just kind of melted away. I really wished I had started sooner but now at least I go down there about once a month or so and enjoy it each time.
